STEM
When studying A-level Sciences at Nottingham High School, you will be encouraged to aim for the highest level – many of our students go on to study science-related courses at university.
You will be guided in your learning by teachers who all have expert subject knowledge. We have an effective mix of recent graduates with new perspectives and established colleagues with many years of experience. You will be supported in applying your understanding to new scenarios, analysing data accurately and drawing valid conclusions based on multiple, often conflicting, sources of information.
Science Facilities
The three science departments have excellent facilities, housed in a high-quality, purpose-built science block. Our teaching labs are fully equipped for the required practical work and much more beyond, supported by specialist technicians. For example, in A-level Biology you will be able to genetically engineer bacteria to fluoresce, in A-level Chemistry you will be able to synthesise complex organic molecules using a rotary evaporator, and in A-level Physics you will be able to view the skies using both solar and Cassegrain telescopes.
There are lots of additional opportunities here for you too, including entering the Intermediate Biology Olympiad, British Biology Olympiad, UK Chemistry Olympiad, British Physics Olympiad and Astronomical and Astrophysics Olympiad competitions. In recent years we have had students reach the finals of some of these and some have even been selected to compete internationally, including in Tokyo and Georgia. There are also various essay, photography and practical events, including the Chemistry Schools’ Analyst Competition. Each department also offers a range of co-curricular clubs in which sixth-form students can take a leadership role – our ‘Beast Club’ and ‘Vex Robotics Club’ are firm favourites.
