Our Junior School students were delighted to spend the last week of term with artist Faith Bebbington creating the tree of life, focused on the theme of diversity and inclusion students affectionally named the piece the ‘diversi-tree’.

150 Students from years 3 to 6 worked together to create the 3D sculpture out of tape, newspaper and wire. Each year group took turns building elements for the sculpture across 5 days.

Faith said “I had a rough idea of what I planned to make for the Diversity and Inclusion theme, referencing Keith Haring and the old Busby Berkeley dancers in formation to create a tree of life”

Based in Liverpool, Faith Bebbington has been a professional artist since 1994. Faith creates dynamic figurative sculptures which capture movement and can humanise public spaces.

Faith focusses on re-using recycled waste materials mainly for large scale works and modelling with polymer clay for smaller scale work, and exploring sculpting with papercrete (concrete & paper).

Remarking on the Junior School students Faith said “On the first day, I realised I could be quite ambitious with this sculpture. The level of dexterity and the children’s enthusiastic commitment to making, meant we could be really ambitious with the figures”

The students loved working with Faith, learning all about her life as an artist and asking plenty of questions about her previous commissions, especially the Runner which became a symbol of hope and strength in Liverpool during the Covid-19 crisis.

The Tree of Life will be displayed in the Junior School atrium, taking pride of place next to the library.
