At Nottingham High School, there is always a chance to get involved with a new activity or try out a new experience. I, for one, have balanced the academic side of sixth form life with wakeboarding at an aqua park, hiking in the Peak District and selling donuts to support a children’s hospital. Though in amongst all the thrilling highlights, we all have difficult days. This article discusses student values, and the benefit that comes from us supporting each other.

As students, (and certainly as teenagers) we can sometimes get caught up in our personal lives and lose sight of the wider reality around us. A hard day can lead us to forget all our fantastic achievements, and just how amazing each of us are. We should not fear our emotions, but instead, find understanding and support in our diverse community. Beautiful growth comes about when we water each other.

Young people often hear just how young we are, and listen to what adults expect of them. Perhaps we less often think about what we expect of each other. The way we carry ourselves and interact with those around us impacts how we make others feel. In fact, it impacts how we feel about ourselves. How can we show up for each other? How can our peers show up for us?

We can begin by reflecting on the school values introduced to us on Speech Day: Empathy, Excellence, Individuality, Respect and Curiosity.

We should not fear our emotions, but instead, find understanding and support in our diverse community.
